Outdoor Hour Challenge 1

This week we began our first challenge. We headed outside, walked down the road to see what we could see. The time was so precious – looking at God’s handiwork together!

Tasks:

  1. Read pages 1-8 of the Handbook of Nature Study
  2. Spend 10-15 minutes outside observing
  3. Talk to Lachlan about 2 things he found interesting
  4. Throughout the week, find out more information about those 2 items

There were so many interesting things to look at. Even a weed that I was about to trample on, became a great source of delight to my six year old son, Lachlan. We looked at many leaves of all shapes and sizes and stuffed them into our bags.

Then we happened upon a carpet of ‘winged’ seeds under a tree. I threw one up into the air and it glided to the ground. It had  a rotor action much like a helicopter. Lachlan loved them and it was hard to get away!

After our walk, we snuggled on the swing chair and looked again at the specimens in our  ‘field bags.’ By the end, Lachlan had collected quite a lot of interesting things…..

We talked about the things that we could not bring home in our field bags….. Next time we will have to record our findings with a camera.

We came inside and dumped our treasures on the table. We opened to the first page in our new Nature Journals, and did leaf prints with our new watercolor sets. I was just as excited as Lachlan! After completing his first Notebook Page, Lachlan went on to paint all afternoon.

The things that he wants to investigate further are those ‘winged’ seeds and other seeds and seed pods.
